How to Service Mercruiser Outdrives[/h]
Tools needed: Socket Set & Socket Wrench,Screwdriver, Drive Gear Lube, Prop shaft grease, Allen Set, Alignment Tool, Replacement parts if needed, and Repair Manual (recommended).
Warning: During reassembly, always use new gaskets and approved gasket sealer. Always refer to your service manual.
1. Grease the Propeller Shaft:
-Remove prop nut and all associated hardware.
-Pull the prop straight off
-Remove the thrust hot
-Grease the prop shaft
-Inspect prop for damage
If any damage, get the prop shaft rebuilt
2. Replace the Gear Lube:
-Remove the filler plug. Near the bottom of the drive
-Remove the vent plug. Near the top of the drive- Completely drain the gear lube.
-Inspect the gear lube for signs of damage. Moisture or metal filings-Fill the drive with new lube by pumping into the bottom hole.
-Replace both plugs
3. Clean the Outer Surface of the Drive:
-Clean the outer surface
-Inspect the outer surface for any nicks
-Touch up any nicks with Mercruiser paint and primer
4. Remove the Out Drive:
-Disconnect the cylinders
-Remove the bell housing, by removing the (6) nuts that secures it
-Pull the drive straight back
5. Inspect the U-Joints and Gimbal Bearing:
-Inspect both the U-joint and gimbal bearing- Replace if- Noise or stiffness are apparent
-Inspect bellows- Replace if- damaged, moisture, or stiffness are apparent
6. Engine Alignment:
-Check the engine alignment by inserting an alignment tool
*If it does not fit easily into place, the engine needs to be realigned
7. Impeller Replacement in a Raw Water Pump:
-Separate the lower unit from the outdrive
-Remove the water pump cover
-Pry the old impeller out with a screwdriver
-Replace with new impeller
