Outdrive question

I have a 2003 DPS out drive and have started to notice that when I put it in forward it has a slight hesitation as if the cable is moving slow through the sleeve or something like that, and if I gas it to soon it will clunk. I used to have a Merc that had a clutch dog go out but I didn't think Volva had that on this outdrive. I thought I would check on here to see what you guys think. Thanks

The sliding sleeve and gear cups should engage smoothly as a result of a slow engagement comparitively!
Although it will/should occur quickly enough that we should not sense a hesistation..... at least not how you are describing this.

Common potential causes:
Incorrect drive oil.
Water in drive oil.
Debris embedded in the sliding sleeve.
Warn sliding sleeve.
Glazed gear cups.... depending on the style that this drive received OEM.

It may very likely require that you pull it down, and examine the sliding sleeve and cups.
The assembly of these three parts are aka the "Cone Clutch".
