what should i check first and so on .

"generically, compression shou

"generically, compression should be 'even' within 15-20psi and all should be over 100 psi. A leakdown test is even better. Leak "trails", whether oily or rusty, are indicators of potential issues. Check the hoses (cooling and oil carrying) for hard or soft and mushy spots. The mounts usually warrant a good check for any distortion. Pressure test if FWC'ed. Make sure all the freeze plugs are solid and still in. check the belt(s) and pullies for alignment, wear, and ease of rotation.

Red Flags - low compression/high leakdown on a cyclinder or adjacent pair of cylinders. Rust visible in the combustion chamber. Milky oil or overfilled oil pan, too. Cracked exhaust system or deformed hoses at the exhaust elbows. A close second here is discolored exhaust due to overheat."
