omc gears

Hi I have a sunbird with a 4.3 and omc drive having gear issues will go into forward and reverse from engine running but will not go from froward to neutral or forward to reverse so you have to cut engine and start from neural iv just done valves and heads it did work before al though it was hard work some times I have book but not clear on whats the problem

From what I've learned, this is usually caused by the electronic shift assist. It kills the engine for a second which is enough to slow it down to remove the boat from gear into neutral.
