Seems to only steer boat one side.

Observation;
If winds/current is pushing to port then okay. The other way I get control. I see the lights green and red come on to try to adjust, but only seems to handle one side.

I am now ready to start looking to fix this. I see the hydopump tapped into steering system in engine room. It has two wires, white and blue. How to test safely the system? Its very old but most people like it.

My use will most likly be to put her on a straight line and relax for a while. That's all I'm looking for.

new problem or an old one?

You may wanna start by bleeding it out to make sure no air has accumulated. Fluid should be clean. Most hydraulic systems use a 5606 mil grade spec fluid - like ATF but with a 'deeper' tint to it.

You have a model number? APxx?

old problem. dont think if was ever working since i had the marina fix a blowout of a hose couple years back when i didnt do my own work.

I had a marina replace a blowout on a hose back when I didn’t do my own work.
They put ATF in and I have been using that since.

I see how to bleed the system from the power unit manual. I start with opening the rudder cylinders bleeds and run the helm wheel back and forth then close. Next I open bleeders on the power unit and do the same.

This is the link to my PU. Docs look pretty good. I have to find out what my helm master pump requires…

Is straight AFT ever used?

can't get the link to work - suspect DNS issues here as they have been frequent this week.

Atf gets used a lot as most find it the first "red" liquid available. Best to check with the source for the helm pump(s). I'm sure the PU is designed to be compatible with most helms. Last time i checked, teleflex owns most of the "brand names" in hydraulic steering now so I'd suspect 5606 fluid would be fine in any of their stuff. You can get it at any local airport that has a service hanger on it - much cheaper than the 'marine' grade fluid.

which helm pump/system do you have?
