Oil injection or Mix? Does it Matter?

Buying a used boat w/ 1997 Evinrude 90 hp OB. Boat has oil injection tank, seller not sure it works. Can I just mix oil and gas 50:1 and forget about the oil injection system?
Never had a boat w/ oil injection.

Yes, just make sure the oil injection is disconnected.

You can, but wouldn't it be better to find out for sure if the oil injection works? There's an easy test for those VRO 2 oiling systems- http://www.boatpartstore.com/vro.asp

Until you know for sure, run premix. Over-oiling will only cost you some spark plugs- under-oiling usually costs you an outboard.

If I may. Manufacturers don't spend millions of dollars developing, refining and constantly upgrading oil-injection systems to have them disconnected by Joe Plumber.

When you have a system that works? Leave it alone! Follow recommended maintenance and enjoy. You'll burn less oil and it won't smoke so much.

That said. If'n yer building a go-fast motor that yer gonna snot on all day, I'd premix.
