Newbie first question 1978 evinrude gearcase

Ok I do work on my motors,This is my first gearcase that doesnt split.
I am replacing gears out of two lowers a 1980 and a 1978 35HP evinrude,Trying to get one together and my problem is how does the shift lever with the cradle go in and sit properly on the new clutchdog.? I have tried different methods and just cany seem to figuar it out! Thanks for a answer!!
 
im not sure but i beleive after 78 omc made changes that would not make 78 and 80 compatible, at least on the 25's. i wanted to put a 78 evinrude gearcase on my 80 johnson 25 hp and the parts #'s do not match and i found out starting in 79 they made changes.. did you match the parts numbers? they may not work no matter how you try.....jmoi....
 
1978 to 1988 maybe beyond 1988 and maybe even 1977 all lower parts match,I did get the shiftlever and cradle installed.Had a different forum and member send me a partial repair manual for the lower.tedious tinkering to join them correctly.
