A friend has a Biloxi Lugger with a J.D. 4045 TFM 150hp engine built around 1999 or so. He purchased it recently and it lacked the expected performance. Turns out the turbo was seized up, yet the engine ran pretty well. Of course it was down on RPM and power output and the boat didn't reach the previously reported top speed. Today he learned from the local turbo shop that the long-term exhaust gas erosion on the housing is so severe that it can't be rebuilt. Based on the soot build up in the hot section, it had been run for a long time with the turbo shaft not turning. So he's looking for a solution.
Apparently John Deere isn't making that turbo any more. Does anyone know of a place to obtain the correct turbo or something close to correct. Non water cooled agricultural units are easieer to source, but initial inquiries indicate that the water cooled marine version might be difficult to find. One from an worn out "parts" engine would be fine as long as it's rebuildable. Or a new unit would be acceptable too.
The engine serial number is T04045T574240 Series 300. Basic engine 17788F. The turbo tag has been damaged.
Any thoughts on how to proceed? I've advised him to call John Deere headquarters, but I have a feeling a source like this forum will be more likely to produce an answer to his problem.
