Mercury: New Coils?

Does anyone know the difference between the old Red or Orange ignition coils with the braided ground wire on the bottom and the newer dark blue coils that don't have it? Instead they have a metal "shim" that runs from the Negative side under the cover. According to CDI literature the Blue coils cannot be used where the red one was originally.

If a phasemaker ignition the coils have isolated internal grounds, if battery CD/ ADI ignition wont make a difference
