Mercury 150 wont start at timesplease confirm year by serial#

got a mercury 150..its on an &

got a mercury 150..its on an '86 bumble bee but not original engine.. guy told me when i bought it that it is a 1979 can anyone confirm this by the serial# 5129898....other problem on occassions i turn the key and nothing. if i jump it at this "starter solenoid" (i know i shouldn't) it will start right up. dumb question but could this just mean i need to replace the starter solenoid?

You have either a bad solenoid

You have either a bad solenoid or switch. Verify that you are getting power to the solenoid when the key is turned to start.
