MerCruiser sterndrive spine

Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this. I have two 2005 twin MerCruiser 305. When I’m in between the engines looking down at the shafts or splines coming in one’s nice and clean and greased up and the other one is rusty as if water has been splashing on there and just wondering where water would be coming from to get that all rusty.
