I am pondering the purchase of a commercial 24' launch with a 170hp Mercruiser turbo diesel, the Cummins engine I believe. Has anyone knowledge of this engine, and especially weakness areas or common faults? If I buy the boat, she will be kept on a freshwater mooring all year round, and worked quite hard. I have found that she does not really want to plane, and struggles. I do not expect to be running at anything much over 2000 rpm however, just slow cruising with my passengers. Incidentally, here in the UK MCA coding will not be given for commercial use of a petrol (gasoline) inboard.
Any observations would be appreciated.
This engine is in start contrast to my 4.3LX, which powers my 19' Maxum with a strong and throaty enthusiasm. Sadly, this boat must now be sold.
