mariner 8hp year?

Hello everyone. I'm working on some old motors for my father. I have a mariner 8hp and was wondering the year. Stamp on the side says mariner 8m 677s 057002. I also can't get the cover off if anyone can help with that. I put the latch down and pull up on cover and it won't come up. Thanks for the help.
