LU Gear Lube

Not really, any good gearbox oil is ok.Change it regularly, and inspect the drained oil in a clean container for metal, water etc.tells you what work will need to be done, bearings, oil seals etc.if the outboard is a big posh one,225hp verado or something under warrenty tho, check with the manufacturer

And don't run Type C lube unless you have an ancient OMC electric-shift LU. Your MFS9.8A3 can run just about any Hypoid (or EP) 80/90 lube. There are some exotic lubes that can even tolerate having some water in the gearcase, but the expense seldom would justify their purchase. Our shop usually uses the Tohatsu-labelled 80w90 lube, which has good anti-foam characteristics, good anti-corrosion additives, and good water tolerance. But... If you have water, you have a leak, and it needs repair. If the old lube comes out clear with no metal fragments, you are in good shape.
