Lower unit

I have a 50hp evinrude outboard motor with a bad lower unit I also have a 40hp evinrude will that lower unit work in the 50hp motor

Model numbers required !------Or a 40 & 50 are the same up to 1988-----Then 1989 to 92 are the same.----Then the 1993 and newer are the same.-----A 1988 will not fit an 89 model.-----And a 1989 will not fit on a 93 model.
