"I replaced a lower unit for a 1974 Mercury 650. Everything matches up but the shift shaft is different. The one I bought has a square shaft, the one I am replacing has a six spline shaft. Assuming the parts are interchangeable, is it very difficult to replace the shift shaft in the lower unit or is it one of those jobs best left to the pros?

"Just FYI, it's a job best left to the pros. It looks easy enough but there is a shift cam at the bottom of the shaft that falls out of place when you remove the shift shaft which means you pretty much have to take apart the entire lower unit to fix it. ooops!!"
