Lost key for Commander shifter 1983 35 hp

I have an 84 35 hp Merc with a commander shifter. However, the key was lost. Is there a way to purchase or rekey without replacing the switch? I have the controls off the boat at the moment. Thanks

Not aware of any place that can "rekey" or replace your lost key.

I recently picked up an aftermarket keyswitch for about 15 bucks - might be the easy way out...

Where did you find such a cheap (economical) replacement. What are the chances of finding a key to match. Too great?

galamb, Just checked with sierra online and found a 3 position 6 terminal switch for 20 bucks. will this work for my situation?

Yes, that will work - 5 buck more than I paid, but same thing :)

I don't imagine that there are hundreds of different keys out there, but given that probably a dozen companies have made them over the years, I think it would be tough just to find a key that would fit.

For 20 bucks, go with the new unit..

Hey timebandit, I thought they only made so many keys too. Thanks for confirming this for me. However, when I removed the switch it fell apart in my hands so I guess it's good I ordered the new one. Thanks to all.
