I have two mid 80's Mercury motors, one is a 7.5 and the other is a 9.8, my question is, can I remove the long leg off the 9.8 and install the standard leg off of the 7.5 with relative ease?

Yes, if they came from the same model run then they are "virtually" the same outboard - the 7.5 and 9.8 shared about 98% of their parts..

As far as being easy thats another story. You will find out when you start taking everything apart. The reverse lock mechanism can be a major pain. Cant you just swap powerheads may be a better approach?
