I just recieved this old generator and I want to clean it up and paint and get running so I can put it on a boat.
Im really not familiar with this generator espr
 
I recently purchased a 1970 40

I recently purchased a 1970 40 ft morgan which has a westerbeke 40 hp deisel. I had dc power until i tried to start the engine and now have lost it. Could this be a ground issue or something else.

William W. from your pics it looks like an air cooled genset fitted with a homemade wet exhaust. I would not recommend placing this unit below deck. no way to provide enough cooling air and will surely overheat.
William P. check your connections at the batterys.

That's not even a marine unit and I wouldn't consider putting it on a boat. That thing is a bad news story just waiting to happen.
