Johnson 60hp stuck timer base

I have a 1990 Johnson 60hp starts and idles ok until you put it in gear (forward and reverse) it shuts off, where should I start to try and fix this problem, Thanks

How did it run for you last season ?-----Did motor sit for a long time with fuel in the carburetors ?----Drain gear oil and see if there are any metal bits.----Post the compression numbers.----See if spark jumps a gap of 3/8" on all leads.

Heading says stuck timer base. Is it really stuck or just not moving?
