is desel oil beter for a gas engin?

Well I red some reviews on here about desel oils being beter,even for a gas engin.Is there any truth to this,was thinking of putting some 15/40in my older 318's.thought I should check out your guys opinions first.Is this too thick.My dad always tought me to use strait 30,but red on here about the lack of zzp?additives and how these aditives are beter for older engins nowadays.So what kind of oil should I use,thanks a lot for everyone's responces,you guys have been very heplfull

Newer oils have had most/all of the ZDDP, zinc, removed for emission reasons starting just this year. These old flat tappet engines like ZDDP. Merc and Volvo oils are still loaded, as are Royal Purples, Mobil 1 15W-50, 10W-40 motorcycle oil or Mobil 1 VTwin. Also Amsoil 15W-50 Dominator Racing Oil, Amsoil Heavy Duty and Marine 15W-40, Redline 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil. The new "SN" oil are not for boats, no zinc.

I don't know about diesel oils, sorry. I hear they are high in ZDDP tho so they should work.

I prefer variable viscosity oil. It's easier on your oil pump drive gears.

Just about everyone I know has been running Delo 400 15W40 from Costco for as long as I can remember.
