Inspecting Shaft Logs

Hi Gang,

I'm going along on a pre purchase survey/sea trial and would like to know more about checking the drip rate and operating temperatures of the shaft logs. Any advice on inspecting a dripless style would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks,

You wanna be able to touch it without hurting your hand. many will be warm but not hot. Some may not drip at all depending upon what is in the box. I'd say more than once in 10-12 seconds is too many.

Most of the dripless ones should have water injector hoses on planing hulls. Usual source is the raw water at the exhaust elbow. make sure the water is flowing thru the hose (engine running) and the hose is routed in the clear and secured. No drips on these.

what the shafts while on plane; they should rotate true and the box should be steady. Any wobble indicates something isn't centered properly or may be bent.
