ignition switch problem

have the 3 pole ignition switch
battery pole - red wire
ignition pole - yellow/red stripe
solenoid pole - 2 purple wires

problem is soon as i let go of the key motor dies
new ignition switch installed, still same issue, switched wires around will stay running but when i shut key off, keeps running
what are the 2 purple wires for?

it helps us help you by letting us know WHAT you are working on, as specifically as you can identify it.

If it is a sterndrive, I'd say that the switch isn't wired correctly and or the ignition is loosing the B+ when the key is released to the RUN position. Industry standard colors: RED for Battery (+ side), YEL/RED is for the starter circuit, PUR for the ignition circuit.

As far as wiring at the key switch, typically there is only one PUR wire for the ignition circuit and it should provide the battery voltage (and current) to the coil (or the ballast resistor is old enough). The other PUR wire may have been added to provide another switched circuit...hard to say without looking at it...
