Identifying fuel tank connectors - Evinrude & Mariner.

Hi.

We have two powerboats at our Sea Cadet unit - a RIB with a Mariner (Mercury Marine) 40 ELPT, and a Dory with a new Evinrude 60 BRP. I'm trying to rationalise the fuel tanks so that they are interchangeable between the two boats.

First step is to definitively ID each tank connector! The tanks may have preceded the engines, so I can't simply call one an 'Evinrude' connector without knowing for sure.

Can anyone help, please?

1) (On the Evinrude): 22.7L 'Duratank' with Johnson and Evinrude embossed on the side. Weird-shaped tank connector with irregular sides as shown. Distance between prong centres of 15mm. Female line connector 'fuel' socket (inside the yellow circle) measured as 6.4mm diameter.

2) (On the Mariner): 'Quicksilver', probably 25L. Distance between prong centres measured as 16mm. The internal size of the fitting shown is 35mm wide x 30mm high.

I'd like to replace the Duratank 'Evinrude' with another Quicksilver 'Mariner', so really need to ID what to get to match the No2 tank shown, and I'll replace the Evinrude's fuel pipe end connector with ditto.

Many thanks :)

(And why do manufacturers make such close-resembling connectors that have you spending 5 minutes trying to get them to fit...?)

Follow up Q, please.

Looking at new tanks, some come with a 'Yamaha' connector. Is this the same as the Mariner type? Or are we now really talking about three near-identical connectors flying around?!)

Thanks.

The one with the yellow ring pretty positive is an omc connector. Mercury used 2 similar that look like an OMC but do not interchange. Some research on your part will be required.

Thanks FS.

I think I can probably forget about the Evinrude/Johnson tank and connectors now (No1 above), since I've decided the way to proceed is to get a new tank with a Mariner connection, and then replace the Evinrude's hose fitting with a matching Mariner one.

So that leaves just one Q - is the Mariner connector the same as Yamaha?! I understand they are, both from the fact that Yam took over/merged with Mariner a good while back and also that this is almost certainly the connector: https://www.marinescene.co.uk/en/pr...or-for-yamaha-mariner-mercury-engine-la-31942 and all these makes are listed.

Soooo, would this: https://www.marinescene.co.uk/en/pr...or-for-yamaha-mariner-mercury-engine-la-31942 fit on to this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132581758699 ?

Or, is there a source of info that provides schematics of these fittings?! I can take whatever measurements are required with a micrometer, but need to be able to relate them to something! Why is this so hard!!

Thanks.

I've rechecked the dimensions of the Mariner tank (No 2 above).

I measure the locking pin's diameter as being 7mm, and it's 28mm long. The fuel pin is 8.5mm dia and 20mm long (with the valve pin adding another 5mm to that).

This Yamaha connector https://www.marinescene.co.uk/en/pr...or-for-yamaha-mariner-mercury-engine-la-31942 is listed as having:

  • Diameter of locking pin 6 mm
  • Diameter of fuel intake 8 mm
  • 9.5mm Barb

Anyone know if they are actually the 'same'?!

Thanks.

???----Yamaha built the smaller Mariners in the early / mid 1980's.-----Where did you come up with the idea that Yamaha merged with or took over Mariner ?-----Mariner was a marketing part of BRUNSWICK also owner of the Mercury marine brand.------Yes it was easy years ago with just Mercury and OMC fittings.-----Now there are too many to keep track.
