How to replace a starter solenoid?

I am trying to resurrect an older motor.
I think that it is a 1978 version of the Mercury 80hp 4 cylinder. The year is the only part in question.
Serial number is 07122794.
I have figured out that the starter solenoid is shot and am trying to figure out how to replace it.
It is buried below the starter so my questions are;
1: Do I have to remove the starter to replace the solenoid?
2: If not is there a way to easily remove the parts at the bottom of the motor head? so I can get at the solenoid mounting bolts?
3: Is there any thing that I have to watch for, kind of any gotchas?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, those were not friendly to work on. BeDAMN sure you don't mix up the battery cables when you put it back together on you'll blow your switch box.

Remove what you must to get it out.
I went out and looked at it again and found that taking the 'baffle' air intake off the front gave me the room to get in and undo the bolts.
Also found that the wiring harness has seen better days but I think that I can fix it, if not replacements are available so it won't be the end of the world.
