"Hi all, This is the story of a 5hp longshaft Merc o/b that has been in upright dry storage for 10years. Questions are about how to bring this back.
At storage, the engine was run dry of stabilized gas & fogged (and plug put back in), the engine was sprayed everywhere with that oily aircraft stuff and flushed in a freshwater tank. The lower gearlube was also replaced but used for a few hours before storage. Took the cowling off today and it looks shiny just like the day I stored it in 1998!. With disconnected plug I find the engine turns with compression and the prop spins a little (as before) when in neutral. I have not attempted to fully start it. Some reading suggests further preparation is needed and one frequent mention in this forum is that impellers rot anyway. The most noticable deficit thus far is that turning the engine left/right in the bracket is stiff. Otherwise all the other controls seem to move ok. No visible rust.
I'm a fairly able diy Volvo car guy so I'd like to use my abilities here if possible. Here's my questions:
#1- what year is this (I bought it in the 90s and the serial number is OD984545)?
#2- should I get/install an impeller/pump kit? Does anyone have the part# for that kit and where should I look for procedure / instructions (are the $5.oo CDs on ebay sufficient for this)?
#3- what lubrication points should I address at this time and should I go richer than the usual 50:1 fuel/oil mix for the first couple of hours?
#4 - what attention or checks should I make to the carb or spark before attempting restart?
#5 - what else should I check out pre-start? Can you recommend a website that covers how to return a stored engine to service?
#6- can I replace the 'Mercury' decals on the cowling and where can I source those?
This was a darling engine that ran like a champ. I'd like to bring it back to service. Thanks in advance for your help.
