Help 45hp chrysler outboard

"I have this 45hp. And it'

"I have this 45hp. And it's wired when i pull the motor out of the water and then start it up,it goes into gear. But when it's in the water it does not go into gear,i checked the prop and the shear pin and all is good.Does some body have an idea for me. And i don't even have reverse."

Sounds like the shift coupler

Sounds like the shift coupler under the side covers is missing the lock nut and wound it's way out of adjustment. Need to know the year?
