I have a 2000 40hp 4 stroke outboard on allum bassboat all of a sudden all it can do is idle,if you try to accell just falls on its face.replaced plugs and fuel filter.Does anyone have a idea what the average compression should be on something like this.It probably has normal to lower average eng hours.Any help would be great,dad wants to go fishin.THANKS
 
do compression and spark check and let us know the numbers. what is the model number of your motor. how old is the gas, water in the tank? when was the last time it ran right?
 
Ran it earlier in the year and it was ok,has always been a little hesitant on accell but you could deal with it.Had drained all gas and refilled with fresh alchol free before i even tried to start it.After i realized there was a problem i replace plugs and fuel filter with no help.compession check showed 100lb on all three cyl,put a little oil in two of the cyl and rechecked=no change.
