Generator smokes

I have a Kohler 7.5 R27 on my houseboat. Recently it started spewing black/dark exhaust. It runs and puts out electricity, but the exhaust is noxious. What should I check? Any ideas would be really appreciated.

I just put new plugs & new wires on it. It is connected to the 75 gallon main tank on the boat, so I doubt the gas is bad. I am currently looking for carb rebuild part numbers and maybe a choke rebuild kit as well.

had a kohler on a houseboat for many years...without getting too complicated i think you are running rich...you could get a can of seafoam and disconnect the gas line with the carb full of gas...insert disconnected gas line directly in the seafoam can and start gen..run it til it sucks enough seafoam into it to die...let it set overnight and hook the line back up and run it til the smoke clears...it may clean it out and correct problem...dump the rest of the seafoam into the gas tank...
