"Hello ,Recently I replaced a forward gear of lower unit because its tooth got ground. Then I put the boat in the lake, start the motor and push the control lever for forward, but it engages to REVERSE, pull the lever for reverse then it goes to FORWARD. What is the problem? The motor is year 78 80HP 4-cyl. Merc. I upgraded a motor from 78' 50HP 4-cyl Merc. That means I still use the same 50HP motor control for 80HP motor. The 50HP motor control does fit to a 80HP motor so I set it up. Is that the problem? Someone Help me,please"

On some model motors you "pull" to get forward and on others you "push" to get forward.

Some shifters will allow you to reverse the cam in the shifter itself to go from push to pull (or vice versa).

If not, you can either live with the way it works or replace the shifter..."
