The man I bought my 1958 Johnson 35hp from had restored the motor himself. He told me to mix 24oz outboard oil with every 6gal fuel. It seems very oily and smoky too. Do I need to put that much oil in the fuel?

What is the Fuel/Oil mixture for my (Johnson or Evinrude) motor?

  • 1958 and prior used 20:1
  • 1959 thru 1969 used 24:1
  • 1964 and newer use 50:1
  • New engine break-in (not direct injection) requires 25:1

In 1964 the boardroom declared that OMC motors could now run at 50:1-------But there really was no difference in parts between a 63 and a 64 model.

Crankshaft needle bearings came out in the 9.5's....new model introduced in 64. I was 8 years old and they were really cool. Got a bunch of em here. Still getting $900 to $1000 bucks for mint ones.
