I have a 1978 24ft Sea ray and the gas gage don't work on top of the tank there is a gas fitting and a fuel line. Behimd that is another fitting is that where the sending unit is .

Send a picture. Typically, the sending unit looks like a round disk mounted on top of the tank held in place by six brass screws. There will be either one or normally two electrical connectors on top. One of the connectors is marked with an "S", which is the sending signal. That wire goes directly to your gauge. The other, if present, will be a ground. There are some units that have a visual gauge mounted on the disk, and the two wires coming out of the side.
