" I've seen this plug connection on my control box but did not know what it was for. So if I buy a tach for my outfit, will it have the male end on it or vice versa to fit the one on my control box? "

When you buy a tacho usually all you ll get is a tacho. If you go to your merc dealer and ask for an instrument harness you will get the harness that you simply plug into that connector then attach the other end usually via 3 ring terminals to your tach.
