Firing up my new 312 Interceptor - CRANKS SLOW

I have a new boat with a 1957 Ford 312 Interceptor engine. It hasn't been ran since 2008. I am curious, does this engine crank slow normally?

Any tips on getting her started.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Matt, back in 1957 Ford was likely using a Bendix style starter motor.
This boat may still be using a Bendix drive starter motor.

If so, do yourself a favor by replacing it with today's HTGR/PMGR (High Torque Gear Reduction/Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction) motor.
The HTGR/PMGR motors spin approx 3 X's faster, and with the gear reduction require fewer AH to do the same work load.
These will turn the crank faster during starting.

The old Bendix drive motors can't hold a candle to the new HTGR/PMGR starter motors.

Awesome, I will take a look at the starter. Is there an easy way to identify?

Any recommendations on where I can get one ??

Thanks !!

A Bendix drive motoruses high quick armature torque to throw the pinion gear out via steep cut spiral splines..... (no solenoid lever action).
You'll see either a case mounted solenoid switch, or a remotely located solenoid switch.

I do not, and it may be tough to find for this model, but it's certainly worth looking into.
Maybe ask the Ford classic car guys.

Thanks !!
