evinrude sportwin 9.5 water pump question

Do I have to pull lower cover assy. port side to access shift rod coupler to remove lower foot to change impeller? This is a 1965 evinrude sportwin 9.5 model 9522c serial #e13410

No. You drop the lower unit down and look for the coupler between the l/u and the exhaust hsg and remove the lower bolt from the coupler on the shift rod. May have to shift it into reverse.
