Hi guys. Like the topic say, I have a evinrude 40 hp 1984 mod. I have a ignition problem and can`t figure out what it can be, so I hope you guys can help me.
The problem is as follow. When the motor is at idle the motor is running a little shoppy and it makes a poff sound. sometimes it stops and I am strugling to get it to start again. Cold start is almost impossible. At sea and at full speed it runs fine but suddenly it can stop (die out) and it is hard to get it running again. Yesterday I had to give up on trying to start it again. I had to paddle the boat home.
My check list was as follow.
The sparkplugs = ok (it fires at both cylinders)
The ignition coils = ok
The cables = ok
The power pack = ? (it looks new)
The wires =ok
The restifier = bad ( no charging and the restifier is bad)
I took off the flyweel and this is what i found.
No cracks and no burning marks
BUT, the trigger is a question. Can you guys tell me if this is bad or good? To me it looks like burning marks.
but I`m not sure. I hope you can help.
