I have just bought an Evinrude 1988 40hp commercial outboard model number 40RCLY.
I want to change the flywheel to one that can accept electric start. I am average at mechanical work but understand the basics of adding a start circuit.
However I do not know where to find what other engines used a flywheel that will be compatible with mine.

Post pictures of your motor and engine with the cowling on and off.----I am thinking that a 1974 / 75 / 76 model 40 HP flywheel will fit.----Need pictures to give you an instant answer.

That is the same style of engine as those listed for 84 / 85 / 86.----Is there a metal ring bolted on the flywheel ?----If so it would be an easy fix.------Finding that flywheel ( CD ignition ) with a ring gear might be a challenge.----Your location ?

I do not see a ring. So I have removed the recoil starter assembly, my system will not allow pictures to upload at the moment so I will keep trying to add pictures

These are the photos, i took off the recoil starter, where should I be looking for the ring?

The 40 HP motors from the 1960's had a separate steel ring gear on the flywheel.----But I can not see , hear , feel or examine your motor ( 10,000 miles away ) so you tell me if it has a separate steel ring on it !!
