Evinrude 100993s stall in gear

My '81 Evinrude 100993s has good plugs/wires/coils/fuel, and runs strong with start lever at half, though rpm is a bit low with lever all the way down. Issue is stalling when put into gear, either forward or reverse. The throttle stop screw is nearly all the way in, yet touches nothing within full range of movement. There is a little play in the linkages, but not much, seems relatively tight. Motor seems to just die when engaging into gear.

First of all that is a 1979 model.-----The first ( no money spent ) step is to do a compression test.-----Post your numbers.----If that is 120 + on all 4 then do a ignition peak output test.----Spark must jump a gap of 7/16" on all 4 leads.

Thanks for your response. The motor title states it's a 1981, but regardless of year, I'll do the tests when I locate a compressor tester, then I'll post results.

Well ---I go by model # and the motor is a 1979 model !!
