engine won't stop

Just completed install of a new crate engine. Connected the wiring harness as best as I could following the original wiring diagram. Motor starts and runs well, but will not stop when I turn off the ignition key. Even taking all the wires off of the switch does not stop the engine. Apparently I have inadvertent wired the ignition directly to the battery, but i don't know how. Any suggestions?

Ayuh,..... My guess is ya screwed up the wirin' of the alternator, at it or at the starter,.....

Take heed to what Bill said.
I don't know if Merc did this........ but on some systems, the alternator field circuit is shared with the ignition circuit.
In which case if the alternator is failing, this field circuit may continue powering the ignition system.
