Engine stops when open up throttle mariner 8hp

Water wasn't circulating, so I put a new water pump kit. I also replaced the thermostat. I noticed a lot of corrotion in the t-stat housing, which i cleaned up.
now, when i start the engine water circulates nicely. When I open up the throttle (more than half way) and the engine is in gear (either reverse or forward) the engine stops.
I noticed that the water circulation increases when i open the throttle but not very much.
Is this problem related to bad water circulation (maybe due to a half clugged system), or it might be unrelated to cooling problems?
