Engine Alignment

Getting the 454s aligned next week. I know the desired misalignment is not more than about .003 inch but what is the maximum allowable. One mechanic told me up to .007 inch is OK. Sounds like a bit much to me. What say you old heads.

I'd say desired misalignment is ZERO and 0.003" max is the minimal acceptable offset....even the old BW installation manual calls that out....

always "best practice" to check alignment after the boat has been floating for 24 hours....if you think about it, I think all initial alignments are done on the hard.....

In the water is the only way to get accuracy !!---------Used to work in a place where the 3000 hp electric motor was aligned about 0.006" higher than the boiler feed pump.----Reason is , in operation the pump heats up and " rises " to get the best alignment during operation.--------------You might consider final alignment check with a " warm engine " too.
