Driveshaft issues SEI replacement 200HP

So I bought an SEI lower for my 200HP johnson from here (marines engine.com). Was told my upper driveshaft would “drop in” the new lower. That’s not the case . The bottom piece with the hole in it does not allow my driveshaft to fall in. Wondering if I can just cut that off or need to buy a new driveshaft with the “clip in” flared end?

I already cut the piece off and the driveshaft fits perfectly . Installed water pump . My only concern is how important is it that the driveshaft is clipped into place or just locked into place once I install into the power head ?
logic tells me it’s not going anywhere , but looking for feedback before I attempt this .
a new driveshaft is over $150 and I would rather not spend it considering I’m into this repair about $1200 and still need a stainless prop

Once its lined up it cant go anywhere. Must have been a clip in bottom as if it was removed it would have dropped right in.

yup. My model driveshaft had a roll pin locking into the lower piece (old model). The newer model has a clip between the upper and lower piece that the upper “clips” onto so they are able to completely assemble the lower and upon arrival to your home you just drop in the upper shaft and shift rod .
I also marked the length of my shift rod with a sharpie , but sure enough the oil made the mark rub off lol (my bad ).
Now just gonna measure it at 26 15/16” and pray

Just a follow up in case someone with my same issue needs answers .
I called SEI and I asked “how important is it that the driveshaft be clipped in place?”. Short answer is “not important”.
Sometimes the clip gets damaged during the install of the new style shaft anyway and the shaft doesn’t clip in .
Save yourself a few hundred bucks and adapt the old one
