howdy all -

probably a dumb question, but do boat motors charge the battery like in a car? i have an early 80's merc 115 hp, inline 6 2-stroke, will it charge the battery when running? i would think they would, as even a small quad or something charges, and generally anything with electric start would charge, but then why deep cycle batteries for boats? ......like i said , probably a dumb question..... thanks to anybody with any help.

Yes they do charge. Pretty much all outboards that have an electric start will re-charge the battery as it runs. Deep cycle batteries are more for things like trolling motors and pumps. The motor is (usually) ran from a cranking battery.

You will not find a belt driven alternator on your 115 HP in line 6,---------Mercury motors have used a stator under the flywheel since the early 1950 4 cylinder models.-------------So if when running you see about 14 / 15 volts on the battery , your charging system is working.
