The gauge on the dash reads close to 170 degrees. Is there any way to test these dash gauges for accuracy?

"What makes you sure the IR is accurate?
If you hold your hand on the thermostat housing, 135-145 should be able to hold your hand on it indefinitely without pain where 170 will be quite uncomfortable"

I can hold my hand on there for awhile but would not hold it there for say more than 10 seconds. The IR gauge is brand new and the gauge on the dash is 19 yrs. old.

"Check calibration on IR gauge. If there is no procedure in the book that came with it, try this:

Fill pyrex cup with water.
Place in microwave.
After it boils for a few seconds, the IR should read close to 212."
