"I recently bought a used 20 hp Mariner, and the engine is pretty dirty. I was just wondering if you can clean the actual engine (under the cowling), like you would with a car engine. Are you able to spray it down with degreaser and then rinse it off with a hose, or is that a big no-no? If not, does anyone know the proper way to clean the engine itself?

Thanks for any help or information!"

"I use some generic stuff called "orange cleaner" or something like that. Get it at Napa or other discount auto places.

Gets the grease and other cooties off, don't hurt the wires and leaves the motor smelling like an orange, at least until I spray it all down again with fogging oil (which should be done as soon as it's all clean to prevent moisture/cooties from getting at the nice clean parts)
