Check timing on 83' Evinrude XP150

Do you leave motor in neutral and use fast idle to increase rpm to proper spec. to check timing? If it needs to be in gear, can a person check/adjust timing by leaving boat tied to trailer and backing into water and then engaging shift to proper rpm? Can you use ear muffs to check timing? Speaking of specs. All my manuel says is 28 degrees at 43-4600 RPM. However this is for 82 models. For 83 models it says to check label on motor....(just my luck). Cannot find a label. Anybody know if this is the correct setting and rpm. Motor again is a 83 Evin. XP150

That is maximum timing advance at full throttle.---------------NOT IN THE DRIVEWAY-------------You need to put it in the lake with an assistant.---------------Timing rarely goes out of adjustment , so why do you want to check it --Any issues with the running of the motor ???

Look up link & sync in your manual and follow the instructions exactly. All the settings can be checked in your driveway using muffs except final carb and idle adjustments. This must be done at the pier.
