Carburetor Silencer - does it reallly make a difference?

As per title, these little plastic thiingy's that attach to the carb throat...appears the later years did away with these. Do they really make a difference for noise levels?

The ones on my 9.9's help. Although, the one I hot rodded is loud now up top. I imagine it is the 15hp carb and maybe the Boyeson reeds. Has a tad more exhaust noise too.

never liked the design should be a box especially on engines that had foam sprayed inside of cover it would be easy to suck dirt into carb or dried out foam
