Hello,
I have a problem with a Mercury 4 hp 2 stroke engine
When I shift into gear and turn the throttle the engine chokes and shuts off
If I turn the lever in gear slowly and past the point where it is about to shut off the engine will respond normally
I note that this only happens when I shift into neutral, the engine responds well and does not choke
I would appreciate direction on the problem

You have a clogged mid range orifice in the carb. It idles on the idle circuit. When you open it a little, it depends on the mid range orifice. Once you open it enough, it will get into the main jet orifice and pick back up. It does it under load and not neutral because it needs more power in gear.
