"I am replacing the head gaske

"I am replacing the head gasket/water jacket gaskets on a 1996, 30hp Johnson and when i pulled the head off the pistons have a black coating on them. Its just along the top portions and inside the exhaust ports. The rings look clean as does the walls and pistons around the rings. This compression checked out ok I was told.

How much carbon build up could cause a problem? Can I clean off the piston tops in the block with a solvent ..Thanks again"

"update, the build up seems to be loosening with the defogger I sprayed in the motor after I took it apart. just scraped gently with a screw driver, it seems to fall off.."
