Carb dump when tilted up

Hi all,

I have a couple older mercs (9.8 and 7.5) and I recently ran both in a barrel after repairs. When I tipped them up on the stand all the fuel in the bowl dumped out the carb throat and into the cowling. When I ran one in the river the next day fishing and tipped it up no fuel leaked out. Any idea what might cause this? Does it have to do with idling in the barrel without load?

Thanks.

I had an older 7.5 I bought new in late 1970s time frame. Do not recall having the problem. I would think the float not shutting off the fuel flow into the carb would be the culprit. The carb has a pipe from the bowl full of fuel to the venturi where when running the venturi vacuum sucks the fuel into the intake manifold and the float drops letting more fuel through the needle valve into the carb. bowl to replace the fuel that left. The tube can't vent fuel and suck air to replace it simultaneously...the fuel would have to come through the needle valve.
